AREDS Plus Lutein Formula
contains the vitamins from the original AREDS study that many
retina specialists recommend, plus it contains high doses of Lutein,
Zeaxanthin, and Bilberry. The AREDS 1 study is the first study by National Institute of Health
and the National Eye Institute that is completed. The AREDS one formula ingredients are
based on non-controlled substances that have antioxidant activity for macular
degeneration. The AREDS based vitamins
in this formula are: Vitamin A 15000 IU (same as beta-carotene), Vitamin C 500mg,
Vitamin E 400 IU, Zinc 15 mg, Copper 1 mg. The Zinc dose has been modified to reduce
Zinc side effects. This AREDS based formula has been also supplemented with high doses of Lutein 50 mg,
Zeaxanthin 10 mg, and Bilberry 20 mg. The Lutein added to the MDS AREDS formula has more
Lutein than most other products. Two tablets a day.

AREDS Smokers Plus Lutein
Formula excludes Vitamin A from the AREDS 1 Formula,
which is thought to be a risk factor for lung cancer in smokers and former smokers, as shown in the AREDS 2 study. This Formula also has added Lutein 25 mg, Zeaxanthin
10 mg and Bilberry 20 mg to supplement the AREDS based formula. This product's recommended dosage is
two tablets a day.

AREDS 2 Study Preliminary results have shown that Lutein and Zeaxanthin supplements have some beneficial effect for Macular Degeneration, especially in those individuals with low amounts of Lutein and Zeaxanthin in their diet. Beta-carotene (vitamin A) did increase incidence of lung cancer in smokers and former smokers. Removal of beta-carotene (vitamin A) from the original AREDS formula did not decrease the protective effects of the AREDS formula. Finally decreasing the Zinc dose from the original AREDS formula also did not decrease the beneficial effects of the original AREDS formula.

Lutein
and Zeaxanthin are antioxidants that are specifically
found in the macular area and help with maintaining macular
health and function. The recommended dose by the United Nations,
World Health Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization
for both Lutein or Zeaxanthin is up to 2 mg per Kg of body weight per day,
which is around 100 mg or more of Lutein per day.
The maximum antioxidant macular degeneration formula contains
high concentrations of Lutein and Zeaxanthin. Most other macular degeneration vitamins
provide lesser amounts of Lutein and Zeaxanthin. MDS
Max has 100 mg of Lutein extract per pill and you only take one tablet
per day. The Maximum Formula also contains 30 mg of Bilberry which
has natural antioxidants for the macula.
